i really like it, although performative overall i think increases good faith art consumption which is overall a W for society. its pros outweigh its cons the UI is really bad though, friends system is rough, so many things could be much more intuitive or useful
Love the platform/website, fucking HATE the people on it. Pretentious filmbros are the bane of my existence and this is their ground zero, but as long as you avoid that whole elitist side of the site it's actually pretty fun
I am already addicted to this org. I use Letterboxd each time I see a film, and before and inbetween. I will now use Compend each time before and after doing everything in life until i have caught 'em all pokémon.
it's ok, a little pointless. not to brag but my ratings form almost a perfect gaussian distribution (with 3 as the mean instead of 2.5 because I'm an optimist about the universe)
I think this website sucks. I think it encourages a type of engagement with film, media and art in general that’s dumb, self-absorbed and narrow-minded rather than opening you up to something. I don’t like that it frames watching film as something to be seen doing, to be competitive about and as another consumer product to develop a superficial idea of taste on as if it’s meaningful in relationships. I don’t like that it tracks with the general trend of media consumption that you need to enter into any subject with perfectly formed taste. I also don’t like that people seem to spend their critical energies reducing a film to a number during and after watching a film, against other numbers in your network, and that these numbers ultimately become data for a trend of flattening and rendering the entire world as vectors. I think it’s also poor quality posting – making simple ironic pun seems to be what makes a good review over there. The end of the golden age of posting – the end of the promise of Web 2.0 and the death of Twitter — brought down the quality of posting everywhere and Letterboxd is a symptom of that. I have an account just to log what I watch but I don’t follow any of my friends on there. If I want to know what they thought I talk to them.
