I think the gross misinterpretation stems from the fact that kokichi and saul goodman both do bad things with good intentions. the difference is we always believed in the good in Saul, but Kodaka pushed Kokichi's character so far into the depths of hate that it seems impossible for him to be redeemed, yet he is.
