do you ever think about how the moon is just about the right size and distance from earth to be the same angular size as the sun when seen from here, and thus make total solar eclipses both possible and as spectacular as they are? the anthropic principle explains why things sometimes appear to be fine-tuned in our favor, but does that even apply here? is it really just pure dumb luck that the moon and the sun appear the same size from earth, or is there some secret reason why that was a requirement for life to develop? it keeps me up at night. keep being weird, moon. we'll figure you out someday.
11/8/2026you shouldn't be able to buy this without a good reason. my partner and I had to spend some of our precious autumn weekend time ripping it out of the woods behind our house because the house's previous owner felt entitled to try to block off a public trail with it. he's dead now and I want to return his barbed wire to him as an offering at his grave.
11/8/2026I'm a flashlight sicko. I go through flashlight phases sometimes. I keep three of them on my person at all times and several more in my backpack. there's something about being able to shoot powerful beams of light out of a handheld device that just really does it for me. they keep making LEDs brighter and brighter these days too, which is making me even worse
11/8/2026I thought these body things were supposed to heal themselves when damaged. what the hell is this shit
11/8/2026ok look I get that it's nice and recyclable and stuff but can we please not make absolutely everything out of polyethylene terephthalate? not everything needs to be made out of polyethylene terephthalate
11/8/2026beautiful and satisfyingly squishy to walk on at low tide. I learned you can eat it last time I visited the shore and was excited to try it, but it turns out it's not very good.
11/8/2026the most sensible possible instrument. you push a button and it hits a string. you want a lot of notes so it has a lot of strings and a lot of buttons. there you go. no problem.
11/7/2026I can't believe the made magic crystals that turn electricity directly into light. how cool is that. notorious these days for being used senselessly and being annoying, but that's not really their fault.
11/7/2026it's a lot like cars. it's fun when you do something cool with yours, but I'd still rather nobody had them.
11/7/2026the art of making a sound more interesting by making it worse. if you've ever heard something played on an instrument and wished you could say "do that again, but make it hurt more", then you need this.
11/7/2026I grew up in the Great Lakes and my heart will always belong to them, no matter how much the ocean tries to steal me away.
11/7/2026everyday magic. makes every city look so much more interesting. there are so many cool types of these out there and I'll never get tired of looking at them. or of building and using my own, for that matter.
11/7/2026I shook it gently by its little shoulders and said "you were so close to perfection. why couldn't you take the last step across the line? why did you drop the ball at the last minute so many times? I love you, but you frustrate me." It replied "isn't that exactly what your teachers said to you in middle school?" and I had to go lie down for a while. But then I came back and said "unlike you, I am capable of growth and change, of righting my wrongs, and that's exactly what I did. whereas you are a machine, and the mistakes that were made in your design live on eternally in your cold silicon." It asked me if I was going to leave it for some other camera, and I said of course not, because it treated me well and did me no wrong. I could tell that it had been about to follow up with something much harsher just before then, but decided not to after hearing my reply, and so I let up in kind. We looked back into the sunset together in silence, a broken girl with her broken camera, and forgave each other. anyway the photos are pretty good
11/7/2026feels weird and gets everywhere, but resistance to radiation burns is indispensable.
11/7/2026I had my ears pierced once. the piercer did an amazing job and they looked great, but then I learned I wouldn't be able to swim for the rest of the autumn while they healed. I sat with that for 20 hours, then pulled the studs out, let the holes heal, and jumped back into the lake. there's no trace left of them now, and I regret nothing. I guess I'm the wrong kind of mermaid for this.
