11/4/26 I read an interview today with David from shortly before his death. The interviewer asks him if he would still be planning to tour his upcoming album, Purple Mountains, if he didn't need the money. He says yes: "I’m terribly isolated and I look forward to meeting new people." The simple truth of this line, the wide-eyed little-boyishness of it, made me cry. When I think back over the worst periods of my life, the uniting factor is that they have all been times when I felt very lonely. Today I fought with my little brother at dinner about halloween candy and fought with my parents for raising me into the long tradition of well-off American intellectual narcissists who spin myths about their own preternatural intelligence and the intelligence of their families and fought with myself about the narcissism of pointing it out, of thinking I'm above it and cried again when the halloween candy stuff and the familial conflict upset my brother. I remember being his age so badly I can feel it like a stone on my chest tugging it down. I was so, so lonely.
