I bought these around three weeks ago in a poor state of ripeness (see my other review), and one has finally reached an appropriate shade of yellow. The taste is curious but certainly deeper than a typical banana and of similar sweetness. The interior takes on a satisfying yellow hue. I am struggling to place the higher notes of the flavour, but they possibly remind me of some of the non-ethanol volatiles that come off a spirit like tequila. Despite the trade name of 'apple bananas' I remain unconvinced of its appleish aspect, though perhaps for a fraction of a second I began to understand. Ultimately I would eat these instead of the conventional cavendish bananas if they were the same price and typical ripeness, but the difference in enjoyment is small enough compared to these practical elements, that I think these will only remain an occasional treat. Four stars.
Bought three of these from an international food shop in Reading, Berkshire during October 2026. The fruits presented as deep green, angular corners, grassy scent, sparse shallow dark lesions across the skin. After three weeks deposited in a 30x25x35cm cupboard with a rotating roster of normal bananas (replaced 2-3x), to maximise ethylene exposure, these latundan bananas have begun to gain a hearty yellow colouration. Not quite done yet, and the corner issue has not resolved. Faint mould growth on the dried tips of the fruit has also needed cleaning. Further review to be posted upon consumption.
