Joyous Lake
Joyous Lake

A perfect album for me, the tracks function as a single mass of hypnotic post-bop inflected fusion. The music sounds just like the album cover. There is a cold, humourless and mechanical quality to how the band grinds along, forming a perfect facade over the athleticism behind it. Joyous Lake does not sound as though anything is trying to burst out of anything, it simply moves.

Still Life (Talking)
Still Life (Talking)

One of my favourite albums at the moment, with a satisfying blend of Brazilian, American jazz and more pastoral sounds. There is a dark sparseness to Lyle Mays' synth and piano playing, and the band has an interesting way of incorporating occasional blues-isms which might sound corny if stated any less sincerely. Some great solos from Metheny too, very lyrical and exciting. The whole band is excellent, you just have to listen to it.

Set theory (music)
Set theory (music)

A very satisfying kind of formalisation which helps us understand sonorities and the relationships between them, but it only tells you so much about the music. There is an uncertainty principle adjacent tradeoff between pinning down the musical sets used in a piece, and analysing their unfolding internal movements moment to moment, which make the sets less relevant. Still, fun to play around with different sets and their transformations.

Breathtakingly beautiful and infinitely biodiverse, with lovely people. But the mountains do take a while to climb, and many of the valley bottoms have been rather marred by industrial gravel extraction.

Never been there but I would move into these living quarters immediately if the possibility arose. Well-furnished rooms with stone benches, hearths, shelves, sleeping alcoves. Having a ceiling could really tie some of these rooms together, but honestly that's negotiable.

Among the most tasteful brickwork patterns, with some structural benefits because the header bricks tie together adjacent layers horizontally, producing a strong wall one brick-length thick. Seems to have fallen out of favour in my area during recent decades.

Fruit sweetness varies severely by ripeness, but maintains satisfying grainy texture at all levels, like a pear-ish berry. Flavour somewhat indistinct until nearly overripe, when sugar content increases significantly and taste deepens. Best described as 'fresh'. Scaly exterior prevents meaningful loss to invertebrates and birds, and small seed size makes it straightforward to eat and swallow the entire fruit. Nobody outside southern Europe really harvests these so if you find one, it's probably yours.

Latundan banana
Latundan banana

Bought three of these from an international food shop in Reading, Berkshire during October 2026. The fruits presented as deep green, angular corners, grassy scent, sparse shallow dark lesions across the skin. After three weeks deposited in a 30x25x35cm cupboard with a rotating roster of normal bananas (replaced 2-3x), to maximise ethylene exposure, these latundan bananas have begun to gain a hearty yellow colouration. Not quite done yet, and the corner issue has not resolved. Faint mould growth on the dried tips of the fruit has also needed cleaning. Further review to be posted upon consumption.

Batumi
Batumi

The sun drops into the Black Sea just off this stony beach and I imagine a plump citrus slice dipping into a boundless green expanse of tarkhuna, finally turning this 'lemonade' lemon, taking me home, masking the synthetic herbal edge, dissolving the leaping tarragon dolphins that course the surface. I turn left and the palm-flanked boulevard remains bright with pedestrians. A little sunlight has glinted from the cloudbase onto these happy folks and the clean roadway. I hear more Russian here than anything else, from ordinary people around the place but also from the largest vehicles. The giant trim men in these vehicles have the guns around here, which they deposit safely at each casino door for picking up post-gamble, and their great shiny cars are built just for them. No former insurance writeoff, worldly and battered, or old Lada, just battered, drives this Batumi seafront in the party hours. The subtropical climate here reminds us that we are close to Turkey, and there are few reminders of inner Georgia in the scene. We inhabit an intercontinental crook, built especially for the use of int-....well you get the idea. The Dubai-esque complexes of fountain-lake-lightshow-casino, which rise as the boulevard progresses, need little mention in their own right; they are of the generic and global kind, though one does have a ferris wheel built into it halfway up. However, some locals move through the zone with their own ends. An old man mobility-scoots along the margin of the most truly fountainous lake, trailing an immense length of fishing line into the water to catch what but the frogs, I think, who are crying out into the coming night far louder than the park speaker systems, which themselves blare now an excerpt of Handel for ten minutes, the path row in unison, and now Bohemian Rhapsody to rapt tourists who soon stop to watch the speakers and ignore the old fishing fellow. Later I return to the grid streets of the old town, a little European-colonial in style with the occasional quirky neo-Ottoman showpiece. The restaurants skew upmarket and the scene is lit tastefully. I find an Azerbaijani place and order a meat stew in sour cherry sauce. It takes so long to arrive that I miss half of the world cup final, but I receive this looming fact with calm mind. A meal, a beer and a synthetic lemonade later I'm back pounding the pavement, feeling a little tired to commit to the whole game but I watch the thing while on the move for twenty minutes, weaving the blocks. Every bar and restaurant but mine has been showing the game, so I just peek into the venues as I pass. A screening at 0.1 frames per second would have suited me just fine. Back at the hostel a Russian and a Turk cajole me into joining them for the final quarter. The Turkish man says nothing for many minutes and then quietly murmurs "The Devil" as the camera pans over President 47 for a fraction of a second. My hostel top bunk is cool and cosy but if I fall I will die. No guardrail makes of me a guillemot at nest.
