It is heartbreaking that a man who produced monuments so vast and defining has a discography riddled with truly mind-numbing nothingburgers. No mastery of his craft is ever in doubt, though like many composers it took tragedy to stir his heart to push himself to his truest expressive limits. I have known many things of Ludwig van, and among them is the tangible impact he has had on my life and work (as well as that of my contemporaries of course). He lives on as a stark reminder of the consequences of deifying the tortured artist, though I suspect he is far less misanthropic than Sorabji. Overall, a massively important composer whose many most important works stand as an inconceivable triumph of the human artistic spirit and least important works can well be disposed of. Foremost Recommendations: Symphony no. 9, Piano Sonata no. 32 Foremost Not Recommended: Kreutzer Sonata
