Johann Sebastian Bach
Johann Sebastian Bach

The so-called Gojo Satoru of music. The father, the son, AND the holy spirit of the art itself. One could call him the basis upon which all great music which came after was built upon or built against. Few words can encapsulate how incredible it is that a man so prolific in his output can put out such indescribably rich literature with every single most simple piece. Many often glaze Mozart as being "too simple for children but too complex for adults", but i think this adage more appropriately captures Bach incredibly well. I will not endavour to do him further injustice fumbling with my fallible prose, and instead urge the reader to let his indeliable works speak for themselves and reveal the universe itself. Truly, at the beginning of life and music, there is Bach, and at the end of life and music there is Bach. Foremost Recommendations: Everything. Foremost Not Recommended: Nothing.

Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven

It is heartbreaking that a man who produced monuments so vast and defining has a discography riddled with truly mind-numbing nothingburgers. No mastery of his craft is ever in doubt, though like many composers it took tragedy to stir his heart to push himself to his truest expressive limits. I have known many things of Ludwig van, and among them is the tangible impact he has had on my life and work (as well as that of my contemporaries of course). He lives on as a stark reminder of the consequences of deifying the tortured artist, though I suspect he is far less misanthropic than Sorabji. Overall, a massively important composer whose many most important works stand as an inconceivable triumph of the human artistic spirit and least important works can well be disposed of. Foremost Recommendations: Symphony no. 9, Piano Sonata no. 32 Foremost Not Recommended: Kreutzer Sonata

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Brilliant author of trite money-grubbing; the origin of many intolerable kindergarten textbooks masquerading as the crowning achievement of western civilisation. The poster child of the Apollonian's obsession with caging the mystery of art with transcendent logic. No doubt one of the finest geniuses musical history has ever produced, yet a standing testament to how even unquantifiable gift can be squandered through minimum effort and a staggering preference for gold over poetry. One of the finest torture methods available and somehow legal in modern times is a continuous 48 hours of his music. Saved from the minimum score only by a scant few works painted in heartbreaking earnest, during only the most sobering moments of his inebriation-addled life. Foremost Recommendations: Adagio for Glass Armonica K356, Requiem Foremost Not Recommended: Frankly almost everything, but most of all the fortepiano sonatas will make you wish you could age regress.
