In modern times, most would say the crusaders were an offensive evil military operation towards defenseless friendly Muslims, but the truth is, that interpretation couldn’t be further from the truth! For centuries the western kingdoms and the Abbasid dynasty of Iraq had an uneasy truce, where pilgrims were allowed into the holy land. By 1066 the Abbasids were slowly being conquered by extra-local Turkish bandits and raiders. These Turks became to be known as the Seljuks, and did not grant safe passage, known as Amān in Arabic, to the Christian pilgrims. As a result, the western forces conducted a military expedition to the holy land in order to guarantee the safety of future pilgrims against these Turkish bandits. Modern Muslims make it sound like it was Christians killing peaceful Muslims, but it was actually the other way around! Google the Great German Pilgrimage and you can read all about how the Muslims would let the Turks kill and rape Christians with a blank check.
