super cool, this snail lives around hydrothermal vents, and in populations around vents that produce a lot of iron sulfide the snails incorporate it into their shells and into armored scales around their body called sclerites, giving them their black color. theyre the only animal known to use iron sulfide like this. in populations around vents without a lot of iron sulfide they have white sclerites and shells instead.

LOOK at this thing oh my god. for reference that big structure in the front with the huge compound eye isnt the entirety of the head, the head encompasses the whole frontmost plate (including all 4 pairs of those appendages under it). the mouth is between the second pair of appendages. this thing is so alien looking you could go wild using stuff like this as inspiration. this is why i love cambrian biota so much.

super cool beetle. due to infection by the wolbachia bacteria they can no longer reproduce sexually, instead being entirely asexual, and they dont normally produce male offspring. occasionally males ARE born but theyre entirely vestigial, they arent fertile. also neither the males nor females normally develop into an adult form, females reproduce as larvae and developing into imagos doesnt make them fertile, but it can happen sometimes and can be intentionally triggered by heat. also, as adults, unlike most beetles females are the more aggressive sex, they'll compete with each other for mates and mount males even though again they cant actually sexually reproduce.
