11/4/2026in hindsight it is hilarious the way the 2023 nfl playoffs went from an outside view. by every advanced statistic, the ravens were historically great. would've gone down in history as one of the best rosters ever top to bottom if they won it all. truly had everything going for them by every metric. lost in the afc championship. the lions were chasing history, trying to finally make a super bowl appearance as the last nfc team to never do so and had a 17 point lead in the game to get there with a team that was dominant all year and everyone loved with an amazing list of stars, albeit now injury ridden. blew the lead. the niners were a 1 seed off tie breakers in an extremely tight conference yet felt like the clear runaway best team in the nfc (and once again had a wealth of advanced metrics pointing in their favor). it felt like everything had finally lined up for them to get their first in almost 20 years. injuries weren't debilitating and they had dominant receivers, they had a mr. irrelevant qb starting his first full season as the talk of the league, the first full season with a future hall of fame running back they made a big deadline splash in the prior season for, and a star-studded defense full of all pros and pro bowlers. it’s 4 years later, the same team against them, another 10 point lead in the big game. one player goes down and one PAT is missed and it sets a chain of events in motion that lead to one of the closest and most anticlimactic ends to a superbowl ever. the chiefs team was pretty notoriously a major step down from the years prior. mahomes had come off one of the greatest qb seasons in history back down to earth. the offense stagnated, the defense was winning then games but not in a way that was particularly exciting or dominant. won a weak division but just didn't seem to have the sauce. i think there is a pretty clear and substantial argument that the 2023 lions, ravens, and niners each in their own right were a “should've-been team of destiny” that year depending on what you look at and they all lost in ridiculous ways. the one team that didn't need it took it after all that. surely the newfound swift-kelce media narrative cropping up helped push the chiefs from a mental perspective and as a niner fan it's hard to forget the biased reffing from the season that sort of got exposed and promptly shoved under the rug not long after. it's just so weird that they won it. i always see other niners fans talk about how that was the team, how if greenlaw hadn't gone down mid-game it would've been ours, how purdy deserved it, cmc played out of his mind all year and should've been mvp and didn't get it. to us, the 17 point comeback in the game prior is a testament to that. yet to the lions— if they had just kept the lead, if they had just been a little more healthy, if they could've just gotten a chance at the chiefs. and the ravens; that was the team, that was the roster, we were so stacked, the playoffs ran through baltimore. sports really can be cruel because there is only one winner and the worst thing about your team being great ever at any point is another team always will be too. statistically speaking, chances are another team will be better. there's so many teams that we view as these eternally terrible teams or constant chokers that just run into bad luck after bad luck or can never get the timing right or the miraculous once-in-a-lifetime comebacks to swing their way. the brewers are just one team that finally found the right year to be great after suffering this reputation for so long. the browns fielded a championship caliber team 3 times in 4 years in the 80s but the broncos wouldn't let them even touch the big game, only for the broncos to not manage to win it themselves in that time. just the wrong time again and again. the one nice thing about sports though is they keep going. every year is a new year and someday your team will be the knicks or the brewers or the chiefs and will finally get over the hump. maybe one miracle run, maybe a dynasty. you have to keep watching to see. personally, i know a certain baseball team that picked the wrong year to be great in 2017. things aren't so bad for them these days. the pain hurts, 2023 will hurt til i'm old, but i keep watching because i believe someday it'll be us. sports are a testament to the human spirit in that way. we all keep believing even when we are struck down because the next season is still going to come.
