today, in the final hour of my shift, i walked past a new installation in the atrium. a spire of perhaps 6 feet of prismed epoxy had been deposited in the armpit/rest stop of the grand, sweeping "accessibility walkway" which spirals up the walls of the lobby and provides, i assume, a necessarily dramatic backdrop for charity events. i imagine the CEO plodding down it at the start of the local TV ads that presumably run during the commercial breaks of Eagles games. anyway, the prism thing. it had done a poor job hiding itself in the walkway armpit and the 4pm sunset (daylight savings) had found it and filled it completely. a square foot and a half of space was littered with scraps of rainbows. i swayed slightly and the rainbows leapt back and forth in return. i was transfixed; as was the 6 year old girl standing by my side, staring intently, for whom my presence did not seem to register. i have spent a lot of time recently thinking about the slow loss of the petite joys derived from possessing a child's imagination, which i retained far past true childhood but which seems to be thinning out more and more every year. i've noticed my brain's grown old. i no longer reside in girlhood. this usually torments me around 4pm. but! this afternoon, as i looked at glittery fragments of light on the floor of my workplace, i thought of none of this shit. i loved the glitter of the prisms just as much as i'd loved every pot of marketed-for-tweens eyeshadow at Justice i stole from my older neighbor in elementary school and the eyes of the Beanie Boos staring as i made my way down the Publix checkout aisle and the holographic stickers my 5th grade teacher put on the top right corner of the homework assignments i'd turn in crumpled and half-finished. i loved the glitter eagerly :)
