White-tailed deer

Its name is also acaxoch and forest deer. It is a forest dweller, tall, with sinewy, well-formed legs. Large-bodied, thick-bodied, it has a belly. It is broad of back, long of neck, large of muzzle, thin, slender of muzzle; of long, pointed, concave ears; greasy, oily of nose; hoofed. Its nails are called hooves. It is rounded of rump, stubby of tail. It is good to the taste, savory, edible. Its fur is ashen. And when it is born, it at once stands up; it is born like a sheep, like a horse—strong, fleet. Its food is maize, kernels of maize, dried maize ears, green maize ears, beans, bean plants; and tender shoots of trees, and rotten wood, and tree worms, and green maize stalks, and leaves of shrubs. The deer with antlers is a buck. [The antlers] are whitish, like wood, like tree forks. When its antlers are loose, they are shed. It inserts its antlers in the fork of a tree; then it backs up; it breaks off the antlers in the tree. Thus it becomes young again. The deer without antlers is a doe. Still immature, a fawn, it is spotted, spotted white like a mountain goat. [The white deer] is said to be the ruler of the deer. It appears only rarely. The [other] deer go gathered around it. [Its color is] not really like carded cotton but only whitish, ashen.
