While the white man's mass hunting of pinipeds was detrimental to nature, Indigenous tribes have hunted seals sustainably for generations, and for many northern tribes such as the Inuktitut these seals provide oil, meat, skins, all things needed to sustain life in the arctic, and not a part of the animal is wasted, nor are they overhunted. The nuance of seal hunting is that the primary thing people think of is a result of european colonization, not the actual practice as it is performed by natives.
