- White-tailed eagle
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-05It has scant, ashen [feathers]; it lacks down; it is very chalky. The bill is yellow, the legs are yellow. It is called “nocturnal eagle” because it appears nowhere much by day, but at night it eats, it preys on [its victims].
- Hen harrier
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-05Also it is called chienquauhtli. It resembles a black-bellied plover. It has a yellow beak, it has yellow legs.
- Golden eagle
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-04The eagle is yellow-billed—very yellow; the bill is yellow, very yellow. The bill is thick, curved, humped, hard. The legs are yellow, an intense yellow, very yellow, exceedingly yellow. They are thick. The claws are curved, hooked. The eyes are like coals of fire. It is large, big. On its head, and neck, and on its wings, on its wing-bends, and on its back lie feathers called quauhtapalcatl. [Those on] its wings are called ahaztli, and apalli, and mamaztli. Its tail [feathers] are called quauhquetzalli; [the feathers] which cover its tail are called quammoloctli [and] quappoyaualli, and those which lie next to [its skin] are called tlachcayotl; so one calls them quauhtlachcayotl. The eagle is fearless, a brave one; it can gaze into, it can face the sun. It is brave, daring, a screamer, a wing-beater. It is ashen, brown. It beats its wings, constantly beats its wings; it grooms itself; it constantly grooms itself. ... It is large, the same size as those first mentioned. The bill is yellow; its legs are yellow. It is called itzquauhtli because the feathers of its breast, of its back are very beautiful; they glisten as if blotched with gold, and they are called quauhxilotl. Its wings, its tail are blotched with white; they are somewhat golden like the feathers of the falcon. And it is called itzquauhtli because it is a great bird of prey. It preys on, it slays the deer, the wild beasts. To kill them, it beats them in the face with its wings and then pecks out their eyes. It can slay very thick snakes, and can kill whatever kind of bird flies in the air. It carries them off wherever it wishes to go to eat them.
- Osprey
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-05It is like the golden eagle. Its head is a little golden, a little more black. Its bill is a little blackish, somewhat yellow. On its breast, its back, its wings it is completely black [and] gold. Its tail is only flecked with white; it is long, a cubit long. Its legs are slightly green, [slightly] yellow. It is named aitzquauhtli because when it goes flying high, if it wishes to eat, from there it streaks down. When it descends, it goes whirring, it suddenly dives into the water; it seizes whatever it wishes to eat, perhaps a fish. The lagoon water does not damage its eyes.
- Rufous crab hawk
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-05It is not very large; average in size, somewhat the same as the turkey hen living here. It is named mixcoaquauhtli because at the back of its head are its feathers, paired feathers forming its head pendant. It is white across the eyes, joined, touching the black; so is the face adorned. Its bill is yellow, curved. All its feathers are somewhat black [trimmed with] yellow. Its legs are yellow. It lives everywhere and is also a bird of prey. The different eagles mentioned inhabit inaccessible places, among the crags; [there] they nest, lay eggs, hatch their young. And they hunt them in this way: so that their young may be taken, the hunter places a palm-leaf or solid reed basket on his head. When the eagle becomes angry, it sets out to seize the palm-leaf basket; it carries it off. Very high it carries it. From there it drops it, thinking it is the hunter. When [the eagle] has released it, then it comes thundering down on it. But the hunter has meanwhile removed its young far away. The eagle´s food is flesh.
- King vulture
canaryswear's latest · 2026-11-05It is smoky. The wings are curved, resembling an eagle’s. The bill is curved.
