The Early History of Fantasy

Just finished this last night, it’s not really like anything I’ve ever read. The enigmatic, fablesque style is extremely compelling to read, and the constant tonal swings between whimsical, philosophical, and horrorific are handled very well and serve the strange atmosphere of this far-far-future earth. The gender issues in the stories are fascinating, especially for 1950. It’s still definitely written from a patriarchal perspective but there’s also a complex, contradictory awareness of gender oppression, even if it’s limited.
