It is named xalquani because it always eats sand, though sometimes it eats atatapalacatl [water plants]. It is the size of the goose. [On] its head, its feathers are white on the crown; the sides of its head green, resplendent. Its neck is like a quail’s; its back ashen; its breast white; its tail dark ashen, [but] on each side is placed a white [feather]. Its wings are silvery, not long; its wings glisten; the ends are white, the wing tips black. On both sides [of the bird] are placed tawny [feathers]. Its legs are black, short, and small. It does not rear its young here; it also comes, it also migrates. Many come. They are edible, savory.
