ive tried to explain what it is about The Kinks that affects me so much before but I simply cant. because in essence The Kinks aren't about any particular title or adjective i could give to them. its not even about their achievement, or their standing in the vast historical canon of music. if you click on any video relating to them youll see at least one comment comparing them to The Rolling Stones or The Beatles, but thats not what The Kinks are about; they were contemporaries of those bands, so what? what else can you possibly tell me about The Kinks? well what i can tell you is that i think theyre really sweet. theyre pretty charming in a way that might seem a bit contrived to others, but definitely not to me because i completely adore them. i am charmed. maybe i could start by explaining how The Village Green Preservation Society is the best song in the known universe too, but also it isnt even the best song on their homonymous album. it just gets so much better. i kinda cannot listen to them regularly because im scared that i would then consider them run of the mill and i know theyre much more than that. maybe i could tell you how both Ray and Dave were so incredibly sympathetic toward the lower working class that sometimes it seemed like they were just parodying it; they were so dichotomous in their approach to the relationship between the sonic and the lyrical, and yet so modest about the whole thing. im so ordinary and the music is not, but it fundamentally is, you know. i dunno. i cannot possibly imagine anything beyond. i know it sounds like an exxageration but im being honest. maybe they just possessed the capacity for empathy. i really dont know. i love love love love them. theres music that words or acknowledgements and all the love one can muster simply cannot adequately capture. sorry guys.
