The transition from depicting a Sun god as somewhat anthropomorphic to a full acceptance of its abstraction is amazing. This thing in the sky that made us and loves us, it is in the sky because it is watching us and wants to protect us. To quote the article, "Aten was beyond creation. (...) [Its] power transcended human or animal form." The rays end in hands because although you cannot see it, the warmth from the sun is embracing your skin, holding you just like how you hold everything in the world.
